Due to their demographic and economic growth, Puebla and its metropolitan area require an upgrade to their transportation system to prevent a sharp rise in greenhouse gas emissions. The Puebla-Cholula rail corridor presents a tremendous opportunity in this regard, thanks to a route that passes through the region’s most dynamic areas and leverages existing infrastructure. The current service, operating at very low commercial frequencies and speeds, needs to be upgraded to meet the needs of the population and achieve financial efficiency. Alongside an already efficient network of three BRT lines, the 16.4-km corridor could become a key public transit backbone for the metropolitan area and support ongoing urbanization processes in a positive way.
During this feasibility study, DVDH is examining a wide range of potential short-, medium-, and long-term measures to develop a modern, efficient light rail service that aligns with greenhouse gas emission reduction goals. The team has thus identified concrete measures for the development of the areas traversed, as well as a potential reorganization of the service’s operations.
